About Making Tax Digital Calculator: An Independent UK Calculator, Not HMRC, Published by Piyush Choudhary
Published
An independent website for UK sole traders and landlords that works out whether Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you, and from which April. It isn’t HMRC or a government website, and its answers are estimates.
What the site does
You type in your income, and the calculator tells you from which April Making Tax Digital for Income Tax applies to you and which tax return decided it. Other pages work out your quarterly deadlines and what a missed deadline or a late payment would cost. Every figure comes with the GOV.UK page or the law it’s taken from.
Independent, and not HMRC
This is an independent website. It isn’t HMRC or GOV.UK, and no part of government runs it, pays for it or has approved it. The calculators give an estimate from the published rules and what you type. That isn’t tax advice, and HMRC decides whether Making Tax Digital applies to you and from when. You sign up for Making Tax Digital on GOV.UK, never through this site.
Who publishes it
The site is published by Piyush Choudhary, who is responsible for it. You can write to him at contact@
He checks figures too. Deepika Jhajharia, below, reads every page, and is named as reviewer under the title of the homepage and of every calculator and guide. Where someone has also checked a page’s figures line by line, the page says so under its title, with who checked them and the day, and that line goes if the page changes until it is checked again.
Who else checks the figures
Deepika Jhajharia
Deepika Jhajharia has 10 years or more of experience in the benefits field, including benefits projects in the UK and Europe with the World Bank. She reads every page on this site and reports any problem she finds, which is then fixed at its source. Every rule on a page still comes from an official page, shown with its source: GOV.UK, HMRC’s own manuals or the law on legislation.gov.uk.
How the site is paid for
The site is free to use and earns nothing. It carries no advertising and no affiliate links, and no software company, accountant or anyone else pays to appear on it. It may carry advertising in future. If it does, the privacy page and the cookie page will change first and say what the advertising collects.
How the pages are made
Every rule on the site comes from official pages only: GOV.UK, HMRC’s own manuals and the law on legislation.gov.uk. Each one is kept with the exact words it rests on and the day they were read, and the figures on a page are printed from those records. How we check the figures follows one figure all the way from GOV.UK to the page.
We write the pages and build the calculators with the help of AI tools, and we use them in the research and in the reviews as well. Every figure still comes from a record of an official page.
What it never asks for
There are no accounts, no sign-up or contact forms and no comments. The site never asks for your National Insurance number, Unique Taxpayer Reference, Government Gateway sign-in, bank details or documents. The calculators run in your browser and send nothing you type anywhere. The privacy page says what little the site does handle.
If something on the site looks wrong, the corrections page says how to tell us and how it gets fixed.
